# Cloudinary AI Background Removal

> **INFO**:
>
> * We're intending to deprecate the Cloudinary AI Background Removal add-on in the near future. Customers who created an account after 1st February 2026 can't subscribe to this add-on.

> * The [background removal](background_removal) transformation provides all the same functionality as the add-on. It has a special [transformation count](transformation_counts#special_effect_calculations).

> * If you're currently subscribed to the add-on, we recommend switching to billing by transformations. You'll need to unregister and wait for the next billing cycle to be billed based on transformations. After unregistering, you can continue to use up any quota you've already paid for, however if you run out of quota, attempts to use background removal will result in a 403 error until the quota reset date. It's best to unregister a couple of days before the quota reset date, in case you need to increase your quota.

The Cloudinary AI Background Removal add-on combines a variety of deep-learning algorithms to recognize the primary foreground object(s) in an image and accurately remove the background in a matter of seconds.

> **NOTE**: This add-on only supports images, however there are ways to make backgrounds transparent in video overlays to effectively change the background of a video. See [Video effects and enhancements](video_effects_and_enhancements#transparency) for details.

> **TIP**: [MediaFlows](https://console.cloudinary.com/mediaflows), Cloudinary’s drag-and-drop workflow builder for image and video, offers an out-of-the-box, low-code workflow template to automate the process of removing image backgrounds at scale.

Learn how to remove image backgrounds in the [Background removal guide](background_removal).
