DAM New York Event Recap: Why You Should Adopt a Digital-First Asset Management Strategy

As the world’s leading conference dedicated to digital asset management (DAM), DAM New York is a unique environment to share knowledge, exchange experiences, and build long-lasting professional networks.

I had a great time connecting with DAM professionals across industry sectors who are also thinking about the future of digital asset management. During the event, I had the opportunity to present a session about how a digital-first DAM helps resolve key asset management challenges and adds value for every user.

Here are some key takeaways from my presentation, including how Cloudinary can help brands eliminate resource bottlenecks by streamlining the digital media asset management process.

Legacy DAMs are a good example of the old saying, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” They can still do the job for many enterprises and add value. However, legacy DAMs weren’t built to keep up with today’s fast-moving digital-first visual economy. Teams relying on legacy solutions are faced with ever-increasing costs of maintaining their DAM and are quickly being left behind.

While there are several DAMs capable of supporting most enterprises, not all DAMs are built the same. That’s why a digital-first asset management strategy that leverages Cloudinary DAM can help organizations best support their burgeoning digital media libraries.

Cloudinary DAM empowers technical teams with nearly unlimited automation possibilities. It can turn any DAM into a customizable solution capable of supporting all key media formats from imagery to video to AR, across any device, screen, or location. Cloudinary DAM includes such capabilities as:

  • Flexible ingestion: One of Cloudinary’s powerful DAM features is upload presets. This allows teams to specify predetermined (behavioral-based) workflow logic during uploading and configure to automatically apply per upload method (e.g., API or media library), asset type (e.g., image, video, or “RAW”,) or even be interactively applied via a user-selectable dialog.
  • Asset processing: This  newest capability available within the Cloudinary DAM interface enables evaluation processing via JavaScript within upload presets. It empowers technical teams to provide additional functionality without having to request product changes from the DAM development team. This gives enormous flexibility and also offers nearly immediate added value for organizations, as it allows technical teams to focus on more strategic tasks than track DAM requests.

As part of the asset processing workflow, Cloudinary DAM also has a powerful and flexible metadata extraction and identification engine. This simplifies and speeds up asset processing even further by:

  • Mapping embedded metadata to structured metadata: Copy existing embedded metadata to corresponding defined metadata fields.
  • Moving to folder per embedded metadata: Transfer items to a specific folder based on an embedded metadata value.
  • Automatically identifying metadata from filenames: Extract one or more values within an object’s filename to corresponding defined metadata fields.

Why struggle with antiquated and disparate methods of asset management? Cloudinary DAM automates repetitive, time-consuming digital asset management tasks, which frees up your teams to think creatively and tackle more strategic business goals..

As content becomes more dynamic, your organization can’t afford to continue to maintain a legacy DAM. Modernizing your DAM strategy may seem daunting, but it pays off.
