Frequently Asked Questions

A 4×6 is the standard photographic print size in the United States and the most common size offered by print labs, kiosks and home photo printers. It measures 4 inches by 6 inches, which is a 2:3 aspect ratio, the same ratio most digital cameras and many phone cameras produce natively. That is why a 4×6 usually needs less cropping than other print sizes. Internationally the closest equivalent is 10 by 15 centimetres, which is very slightly different but accepted by most labs as the same product.

Three hundred DPI is the standard for photographic printing and gives a 1200 by 1800 pixel file at 4 by 6 inches. Most labs expect this and it is the safe default. Two hundred DPI is acceptable for casual prints and produces a smaller file. Below about 150 DPI the print starts to look soft, particularly in fine detail such as hair or text. If your original photo is smaller than the target pixel dimensions, enlarging it will not add detail that was never captured, so start from the largest version of the image you have.

Fill crops the photo so it covers the whole 4×6 frame with no borders, which suits most prints but loses whatever falls outside the frame. Pad fits the entire photo inside the frame and adds a background colour to make up the difference, which keeps every part of the image but leaves visible bands on two sides. Use fill when the composition has room to lose at the edges, and pad when the full frame matters, for example a group photo where someone sits near the edge.

Print labs and kiosks expect a specific size and ratio. Sending a file with the wrong proportions means the machine crops it for you, usually from the centre and usually badly, which is how heads end up cut off. Resizing first puts that decision in your hands. It also matters for ordering online, where an incorrectly proportioned upload is either rejected or silently cropped, and for home printing, where the wrong ratio leaves uneven white margins.

Start from the original file rather than one that has already been resized or messaged, because each save cycle discards a little detail that cannot be recovered.
