Go From Prompt to Production-Ready Image Automatically

AI image generation has become easy. Shipping those images into production hasn’t.

Developers today face two new challenges. First, AI is evolving at breakneck speed, making it difficult to consistently get the results they want while choosing and integrating the right models. Second, generating an image is only the beginning. Every asset still needs to be stored, transformed, optimized, versioned, and delivered, before it can power a real application.

Cloudinary’s Image Generation solves both problems.

With a single API, developers gain access to a curated ecosystem of leading image generation models while automatically integrating every generated asset into Cloudinary Image. Instead of stitching together model providers, storage, optimization, and delivery infrastructure, you can generate production-ready images that are immediately available for transformation, optimization, and global delivery.

“Generating an image is no longer the difficult part,” said Mike Carley, Director of Product Marketing at Cloudinary. “The real challenge is everything that happens afterward: storing assets, managing variations, optimizing delivery, localizing content, and keeping pace with a rapidly changing model ecosystem. Cloudinary’s Image Generation removes that complexity, allowing developers to go from prompt to production through a single system.”

No single image generation model excels at every task.

Some models produce stronger photorealistic imagery. Others are better suited for product photography, typography, editing workflows, or creative generation. Cloudinary’s Image Generation gives developers access to a growing ecosystem of leading models, so they can select the best option for each workflow without rebuilding integrations as the market evolves.

A developer building a product catalog can call one model for clean studio shots and another for lifestyle imagery — without touching storage, delivery, or any infrastructure code in between.

With Image Generation, developers can:

  • Access multiple leading image generation models through a single API.
  • Instantly adopt newly released models as they’re available.
  • Avoid vendor lock-in as the model landscape evolves.
  • Experiment with different models without rearchitecting applications.
  • Integrate through an API-first design built for existing developer workflows.
  • Connect through model context protocol (MCP) for agent and LLM automation.

Choosing the right model is only the first step. Cloudinary gives you the flexibility to use the best model for every generation task, then automatically turns every result into a production-ready asset that’s immediately available for transformation, optimization, and delivery.

Generating an image is only the first step. Before it can power a real application, it still needs to be stored, managed, transformed, optimized, versioned, and delivered. With most image generation services, developers are left to build and maintain that infrastructure themselves.

Cloudinary’s Image Generation eliminates that work by automatically converting every generated image into a first-class managed asset the moment it’s created. Instead of downloading temporary outputs, re-uploading files, or stitching together additional services, generated images immediately become part of your existing Cloudinary media pipeline.

Every generated image is:

  • Automatically stored with its complete generation history, including the model, prompt, and seed.
  • Instantly available for automated transformations, editing, and bulk operations.
  • Immediately optimized for image size, format, quality, and aspect ratio.
  • Delivered through a persistent Cloudinary URL that’s ready to use in production.

There is no download step, re-upload process, or additional infrastructure required.

Because generated images live alongside the rest of a developer’s media library, the same transformations, optimization rules, localization workflows, security controls, and global delivery capabilities already in use  apply automatically.

Cloudinary also preserves each asset’s generation metadata, including the model, prompt, and seed, so developers can reproduce results, iterate from proven prompts, and maintain a complete record of how every AI-generated asset was created.

Image Generation is designed for the way developers build modern AI-powered applications. Every capability is API-first, making it easy to integrate image generation into existing services, workflows, and automation pipelines without changing how your applications are built.

Image Generation is fully accessible through the MCP, enabling LLMs, AI agents, and autonomous workflows to generate, transform, and manage production-ready media through the same trusted Cloudinary platform.

The result? Developers spend less time wiring up infrastructure for every new model, and more time shipping the applications that use them.

Whether developers are building AI-powered applications today or preparing for the next generation of agentic workflows, Cloudinary provides the production-ready infrastructure that takes you from prompt to production through a single, developer-first platform.

What is Cloudinary Image Generation?

Image Generation is a Cloudinary capability that gives developers a single API into a curated set of leading AI image models. Every generated image automatically becomes a managed Cloudinary asset, ready for transformation, optimization, and delivery.

How is this different from calling an image generation model directly?

Calling a model API on its own returns a file. Image Generation returns a production-ready asset — already stored, optimized, versioned, and live at a delivery URL, with no separate upload or infrastructure step required.

Which models can I access through Image Generation?

Image Generation provides access to a growing ecosystem of leading image models, so developers can choose the best option for each task — photorealism, product photography, typography, or creative generation — without building a separate integration for each one.

Does Image Generation work with Cloudinary MediaFlows or the Cloudinary Agents?

Yes. Generated images are standard Cloudinary assets, so they’re immediately available to MediaFlows automations and Cloudinary Agents for tagging, moderation, and workflow routing, the same as any other asset in the library.

Does Cloudinary store how an image was generated?

Yes. Every generated image is stored together with its generation metadata, including the model, prompt, and seed used to create it. This makes it easy to reproduce images, iterate from successful prompts, audit where AI-generated content originated, and search your media library by generation history.

Is Image Generation available on my plan?

Image Generation is available today as an add-on for Cloudinary self-service customers.

Image Generation uses credit-based billing. One credit is approximately $0.01, and each generation consumes a variable number of credits depending on the selected model and output quality. Higher-resolution outputs require more credits.

Image Generation plans and credits are separate from your standard Cloudinary account. Every account includes a limited allocation of free Image Generation credits to help you get started. Once those credits are exhausted, you’ll need to subscribe to a paid Image Generation plan to continue generating images.

Image Generation plans are independent of your Cloudinary account plan, so you can subscribe to a paid Image Generation plan even if you’re using Cloudinary’s free tier.

Paid plans include a monthly credit allocation. Once those credits are used, additional generations are billed on a pay-as-you-go basis. You can view available plans, subscribe, and monitor your remaining credits from the Image Generation add-on page in the Cloudinary Console.
