A JFIF file is a JPEG. JFIF stands for JPEG File Interchange Format, the container the image data sits in, and some browsers and applications save those images with a .jfif extension instead of .jpg. The contents are identical, but software that checks the extension rather than the file itself will often refuse to open it.
Upload the file and pick what you want out: JFIF, PNG or WebP. The image is properly re-encoded rather than renamed, which matters because a rename leaves the original headers in place and some tools still complain. The result downloads immediately, free, with no watermark.
Often that works, because the bytes inside are already a JPEG. It is worth trying before anything else. Converting is the safer route when the rename does not help, when you are handing the file to someone else and do not want to explain, or when you actually want a different format such as PNG or WebP.
Usually from saving an image out of a browser. Certain Windows and Chrome combinations register JPEG images under the .jfif extension, so a right click and save turns a perfectly normal photo into a file that your design software will not open. It is a naming quirk, not a corrupt file.
Yes. Upload JFIF files to Cloudinary and deliver them as JPG, PNG or WebP through the API, with no special case in your own code. If you are dealing with photos coming off phones as well, HEIF Converter covers that side, and Image to JPG handles the general case.
